The Hong Kong Airport Authority’s SkyPier building project included the construction of a five-level international ferry terminal adjacent to the existing SkyPier at Chek Lap Kok, Hong Kong. Passengers who arrive or depart from the SkyPier would have access to the main Passenger Terminal Building (PTB) and SkyPlaza via an Automated People Mover (APM).
Gammon was responsible for the construction of the insitu concrete structural frame for the new SkyPier, as well as the installation of all the building services and airport systems, some of which link to the PTB. The ferries that used the new SkyPier would arrive and berth against two steel floating pontoons that incorporated a baggage handling system, all of which fell under this contract. The internal architectural fit-out and external facade were also within the scope of this project. The floating pontoons were large steel structures (67x24m) that would be fabricated off-site in a shipyard and towed to the site for final installation. Upon completion of the new SkyPier, Gammon was also responsible for the demolition of the existing SkyPier.
Both the APM platforms in SkyPlaza and the new escalators in the PTB were within the airport’s restricted areas, and modifications to these areas required night working and, therefore, careful planning and suitable supervision.
Working adjacent to and, for some operations, in the sea added health and safety complications that were managed by specific control measures and tight site supervision.
The main challenge associated with this project was the construction of the structural frame in a very congested site that was adjacent to existing airport facilities and other developments under construction.
