Gammon Construction Limited and Gammon-Nishimatsu WIL Joint Venture have been awarded two contracts by the MTR Corporation for construction of the three railway stations and tunnels at the Western District, which form a major part of the West Island Line (WIL) extended from the existing MTR Island Line.



The first contract, valued at HK$1.34 billion, requires Gammon to construct a cut-and-cover station in Kennedy Town, and an overrun tunnel with a total length of 650 metres.



The second contract, valued at 4.75 billion, is awarded to Gammon – Nishimatsu WIL Joint Venture. The project includes construction of two intermediate stations in Sai Ying Pun and Hong Kong University, and a running tunnel with a total length of 2.2 km. The Joint Venture will construct these two rock cavern stations by drill and blast techniques.



Works for both contracts are scheduled for completion in 2014.

Gammon has initiated a number of innovative solutions in partnership with the MTR Corporation to minimise the projects' impact on the neigbourhood. For example, electrically operated equipment and comprehensive noise shielding will be used to deliver superior levels of noise and dust suppression never before achieved in Hong Kong, thereby setting a new standard for environmentally responsible construction.



Experienced in railway-link construction, these are the second and third contracts under the WIL project awarded to Gammon which has also won the contract for the Temporary Underground Magazine construction in July 2009.



Gammon's previous railway projects include the construction of the Tai Wai Maintenance Centre of Ma On Shan Rail, the Tseung Kwan O Line extension and the Disneyland Resort Station of the Disneyland Resort Line.



Upon completion of the project, the total route length of WIL will be approximately three kilometers. It will provide a fast, reliable and convenient mode of transport between the Western District and other districts in Hong Kong Island. The estimated journey time from Kennedy Town to Sheung Wan and Tsim Sha Tsui will be approximately 8 and 14 minutes, respectively, while the travelling time from Kennedy Town to Causeway Bay will add up to only about 13 minutes.
