Double wins at the Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence

Gammon is glad to receive two major wins at the Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence (HKAEE), a highly credible environmental awards scheme organised by the Environmental Campaign Committee (ECC) alongside the Environment and Ecology Bureau and major chambers of commerce in Hong Kong.

The wins include a Silver Award (construction industry) for our Intermodal Transfer Terminal – Bonded Vehicular Bridge (ITT) project and a Bronze Award (construction industry) for our Central Kowloon Route - Kai Tak West (KTW) project, in recognition of the teams’ excellent performance on environmental management. Our Anton Street project and Concrete Technology Department also received a Certificate of Merit under construction industry and manufacturing & industrial service sector respectively.

At the ITT project, the team has designed Hong Kong’s first marine-friendly hanging cofferdam for pile cap construction to avoid disturbance to the seabed. Alternative designs and methods for bridge deck construction have also contributed to a significant carbon reduction, while total reuse of sediment avoided marine dumping and direct contamination to the marine environment.

While the team at KTW believes that every small steps could contribute to sustainable development. The team has adopted environmental innovative designs during project planning, such as revising the reclamation method for the cofferdam area by using clutched pipe pile wall instead of diaphragm wall to avoid 18,300 m3 marine deposit. They have also proactively implemented waste reduction measures and green procurement during construction, including the adoption of reusable modular strutting for ELS, as well as metal scaffold and steel system formwork.
