Building Belonging through Allyship

Have you heard of the term 'ally' before? Maybe you have, but how about in the context of diversity and inclusion?
Gammon’s inaugural Diversity & Inclusion event was held in October with the theme ‘Building Belonging through Allyship’. We chose ‘allyship’ as the theme because it plays such an important role in achieving an inclusive culture! We therefore wanted to raise awareness about what an ally is, why they are needed, and how to become one.
At the event, speakers gave talks explaining what allyship is and why it is important; the panel discussed the role of allies in construction; and colleagues from Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and UK shared stories about allyship, while role plays by our Hong Kong colleagues demonstrated how to be a good ally. Also, special thanks to the Lighthouse Club for being the supporting organisation for the event.
Gammon Chief Executive Kevin O’Brien closed the event by highlighting the importance of making change by embarking on the D&I journey through steps such as learning, training, data, collaboration, and policy changes.
It is hoped this event will be the first of many in raising awareness, getting the conversation going and inspiring action for the industry and its leaders to make construction an equal and welcoming industry for everyone.
