DHL Aviation (Hong Kong) Ltd awarded Gammon a contract to build its Express Cargo Terminal (ECT) at Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok.

The contract, which was part of DHL's US$100-million commitment to the development, construction and operation of a dedicated ECT, was scheduled for completion in May 2004; it was secured under a Guaranteed Maximum Price arrangement.

The works comprised the construction of a single-storey cargo sorting building, with a mezzanine-level material-handling platform and two levels of mezzanine office floors. The construction involved pre-bored rock socketed "H" piles, pile caps, structural steel frames, roof and wall cladding, finishes, E&M services installation and fitting-out. The total gross floor area was approximately 18,200 square metres.

On completion, peak throughput at the cargo terminal reached approximately 20,000 shipments per hour, with the terminal was able to handle around 440 tonnes a day.

A number of Value Engineering exercises had been incorporated into Gammon's bid for this project to provide real technical and programme advantages to the client. These included alternative ground-floor slab and piling, pre-casting of the sorting building's columns and redesign of the mechanical handling system platform.

In addition to compliance with typical Hong Kong standards, the flatness of the ground floor slab must meet FM2 flatness specifications while the external envelope and canopies have to comply with Factory Mutual Global standards.
