IKEA, the Sweden-based global retail furniture retailer, appointed Gammon Construction (China) Limited the Design and Build contractor for its new store in Shanghai.
This IKEA outlet is located in Shanghai's Xu Hui district, close to the city centre, with excellent road and future MTR links. IKEA noted that, on opening, the Shanghai store was the sixth largest IKEA outlet in the world and the company expects over 5.5 million visitors every year.
Overall, the IKEA site measures 39,842 square metres, of which the new store footprint occupies 20,736 square metres, with a total retail area of 65,865 square metres, as well as 26,000 square metres of underground car parking. The site also features 7,490 square metres of grade A office space.
The store itself is divided into several areas, each with its own specific functions, from goods handling and restaurants to exhibition halls and self service restaurants, all meeting IKEA's global image.
Gammon began work on the design of the store in October 2001 and piling was scheduled to start before Chinese New Year 2002. The whole project was completed by Chinese New Year 2003, which was a very fast-track design and construction time of just 15 months.
