One Peking was a new landmark at Tsimshatsui and was completed in May of 2003. Building a 'green' office tower and setting it as a landmark for the areas was a key component of the client's brief. One of many environmental features - and the most complex feature of the building - was the active curtain wall system, a unique facade that was mechanically ventilated and integrated with solar sensors and computer-controlled Venetian blinds. This advanced solution combined superior comfort with high energy efficiency. A striking feature of the building was the curvilinear south facade, extending to the top as the supporting structure for the solar panels that provide auxiliary power supply to the building.
The retail podium features interior spaces two storeys high. A glass canopy runs the length of the exterior and was the first in Hong Kong to be supported by glass fins instead of the conventional steel fins.
Gammon was responsible for a broad range of works. The contract included finishing to basement floors, interior decoration and finishing in common areas and the main lobby entrance, raised flooring and metal ceilings in office areas, glass walling and aluminium cladding for the external facade of the retail podium, as well as all building services installations.
Our work at One Peking underlined our ability to handle complex and tight programmes while exercising rigorous safety and environmental practices. Throughout the construction period, our safety and environmental record was unblemished. The site also won an award at the Considerate Contractors Site Award Scheme 2002, organised by Hong Kong's Environment, Transport and Works Bureau. It also won the HKIA Medal of the Year 2003.
