Gammon has successfully secured a HK$300 million construction contract with Hongkong Land to redevelop The Forum at Exchange Square. This involved the erection of a new steel framed building – a total of 4,505 square metres, encompassing five floors of commercial space, a landscaped roof, structural alterations within the existing public transport interchange (PTI), podium deck and basement, and a landscaped plaza.

The inclined and irregular shape of the building appears like a giant sparkling gemstone – a diagrid. Predictably, this unique architectural design is extremely complex to build. The unusual steel structure is inclined which means non-traditional methods are required. Instead of building floor by floor, the steel structure was completed first which minimised discrepancies when connecting the grids. Moreover, welding connections were replaced by nuts and bolts, resulting in simplified work steps, less manpower and minimal hot work on site.

The Forum is a pure structural steel building which is supported by a steel core, the 1,088 tonnes of steel used in the structure was supplied by Gammon’s in house steelwork contractor – Prisitine at Dongguan. The overall tolerance of the structure was highly stringent, Pristine was able to produce near-perfect materials for perfect fit and fast installation on site.
