The HKU Medical Complex Extension is an RMAA project involving the existing campus, and the works involve demolition and construction of new facilities – principally a new three-storey, steel annex structure with a curving wall and a circular boardroom roof that together combine to make a striking low-rise addition to Hong Kong’s diverse urban landscape.
Building Information Modelling (BIM), Integrated Digital Project Delivery (IDPD) and Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA) approaches were all employed in this project. All structural steel works were prefabricated off-site, adopting bolt-and-nut connections instead of traditional welding. It is a process that shortens the construction time and reduces waste generation and energy consumption.
