Chater House is Hongkong Land's development in its Central property portfolio, which dominates the heart of Hong Kong's Central Business District. Opened in July 2002, the 28-storey building was a flagship at the very hub of the portfolio, boasting tenant services and facilities second to none. Its telecommunications, electrical and mechanical features were designed for the specific needs of investment banking and financial services tenants. It offered extensive new areas for shops and restaurants.

Having undertaken construction of its foundations, we started work on the building's superstructure in October 2000, under a Guaranteed Maximum Price form of contract. Responding to Hongkong Land's wish to achieve World class standards of safety, construction innovation and quality, and following a review of overseas best practice, we applied to the project several ideas and techniques that are new to Hong Kong. These included moveable protection screens to prevent objects falling from the construction floor, mini-table formwork for the slabs moved by the use of specially designed formwork hoists, as well as other relatively new products such as jump lifts, hydraulically operated climbing formwork, Hardiwall dry wall wall system for all internal partitions, quick fix safety barriers, prefabricated mechanical & electrical installations and retractable loading platforms.

Built using top down basement construction, the building was finished to a "shell & core" state, giving tenants maximum flexibility to fit out for their own particular use.
