Gammon Wins HK$2.9 Billion Contract to Construct Approach Tunnel for the Express Rail Link

Gammon Construction Limited announced today that a Gammon joint venture has been awarded a HK$2.9 billion contract by MTR Corporation. The project is to construct the West Kowloon Terminus Approach Tunnel and Track Fan Tunnel section of the Guangzhou – Shenzhen – Hong Kong Express Rail Link, which forms part of China's strategic national express rail network.

Gammon is working in a 50-50 joint venture with Leighton Asia.

The project, which provides the transition from the approach tunnel to the terminus at West Kowloon district, involves the construction of 300m of a 'fan' shaped reinforced concrete structure complete with landscaped deck. The construction will utilize a cut-and-cover method with foundations formed on piles and diaphragm walls. Extensive temporary utility and traffic arrangements will be necessary.

Scheduled to be completed in 2015, the contract also includes construction of associated plant and support buildings and non-rail related work to enhance connectivity with the local community, such as a public transport interchange and an extensive footbridge network.

Mr Thomas Ho, Chief Executive of Gammon, said, "We are very pleased to participate in the building of the Express Rail Link from Hong Kong to the major cities on the Mainland."

Gammon is well experienced in railway infrastructure and is currently involved in the West Island Line extension from Sheung Wan to Kennedy Town. Previous railway projects include the construction of the Tai Wai Maintenance Centre of Ma On Shan Link, the Tseung Kwan O Line extension and the Disneyland Resort Station of the Disneyland Resort Line.
